The Success of Mexican Telenovelas

Latinos are obsessed with telenovelas. Teens, moms, even dads, watch telenovelas. The shows are filled with drama and stereotypes, and the acting is always over-the-top. Usually, most telenovelas start and end the same way, but viewers can’t get enough. There’s usually a “Cinderella” plot line, where the character is beautiful and compassionate, but there’s also some type of misfortune in her life. There’s always a villain loathed by viewers who tries to bring down the protagonist. These storylines never get old; in fact, certain telenovelas have so much success, they are dubbed in many languages, including English,Italian, Russian, Arabic, Turkish and Chinese Cantonese. Case in point: “Los Ricos TambiĆ©n Lloran” (The Rich Also Cry), produced in Mexico in 1979. Who can forget Veronica Castro?

Televisa in Mexico has produced 172 telenovelas. TV Azteca, the second-largest TV station, has produced 17, and Argos (in co-production with Telemundo) has made three.
